A photo-judicial tour of San Francisco

Looking West: City Hall and CA state courts

Originally uploaded by tellumo.

While isn’t in the best of neighborhoods, it’s within two blocks of every level of judiciary except the United States Supreme Court, and one of its buildings is a high-rise from which you can easily see all of them. Click on the photo here to start a photo-judicial tour of San Francisco.

. . . call for desparate measures. But you would not believe how much more efficient at studying I’ve gotten after I pulled the AirPort card from my laptop.

Plane trees, Civic Center plaza

Plane trees, Civic Center plaza

Every fall, the groundskeepers prune the plane trees on the plaza outside City Hall. It might just be me, but I think the knobby branches the pollarding leaves behind make them look like ghost trees, like something from the graveyard in The Legend of Zelda. (However, no matter how hard I push on them, no ghosts come out to pursue me.) The unseasonably beautiful weather we’ve been getting recently rather spoils the effect, however.

I finally found this picture from my trip to Japan. The phrase “there are no exits” is a slightly inadequate Japanese translation–I’m not sure of exactly what the Japanese text says, but if it’s what I think it is, a closer analog would be “no exits are available.”

Does anybody know what this sticker is? I’ve been seeing it all over , but I can’t find too much on the Web, and I have no idea what the kanji mean. (I’ve seen the sticker mentioned in connection with Tokyo, which makes me pretty sure that they’re Japanese.)

The Optimus Keyboard

The Optimus Keyboard, a design from the Art. Lebedev Studio, is a physical incarnation of the Key Caps desk accessory from the old-style MacOS. (Apparently it’s called Keyboard Viewer now.) Every single key is a 32×32 OLED screen. This would make learning new keyboard interfaces and typing special characters much easier, and it’s a valuable illustration of what can happen when objects document themselves as much as possible. And it’s amazingly cool to boot.
